Most people feel drowsy in the office during the afternoons. This is a very common experience and happens to almost everyone. It often interferes with most people’s work because most are in their offices in the afternoon time and are supposed to be working. Fortunately it is possible to avoid this by following some simple advice. Years of experience has revealed the secrets of remaining active during this time of the day.

Music

Listening to music engages the same part of the brain that deals with learning and activity. Therefore listening to music is an effective way of preventing drowsiness. If and when you are about to fall asleep, you should put on your headphones and listen to music for a few minutes. After a few minutes have elapsed, you will feel much more active and refreshed. But for this to be possible you should carry your music player and headphones with you, or leave them in the office for work use.

Naps

Taking short naps has been proven to be helpful by years of scientific research and medical studies. It is essential that the naps should only be a few minutes long. You don’t necessarily need a bed--you can nap on the same chair and desk on which you get your work done.

This kind of napping is often encouraged in some cultures. The name for this practice is siesta and is already quite popular.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is a way of making you fresh by the use of fragrances and aromas. It has become very common in recent years. Many offices and homes have aromatherapy installed. The aroma that is released is sufficient to keep you awake and active. There are several other health benefits as well that aromatherapy provides. Needless to say, it has become an indispensable part of modern life.

Exercise

A small amount of exercise can also be sufficient in keeping you awake in the afternoons. Exercise here does not mean that you should be sweating in the gym for hours. Instead it means that even a few minutes of brisk walking or jogging even is sufficient for the purpose of preventing drowsiness.

Most offices provide treadmills for this purpose. But even if a treadmill is not available, you can go for a quick walk outside your place of work.

Natural Light

Most office buildings make you feel drowsy because they do not allow enough natural light to reach indoors. It is already a known fact that sufficient sunlight can keep a person awake for longer durations. If natural light does not reach inside your office, you can go outside and sit in the sun for a while. Then, you can return to your place of work.

Several practices for avoiding drowsiness and keeping you awake have already been identified. These practices have all been tried and tested on real subjects and their efficacy has already been proven. The next time you feel drowsy at your workplace, you can use any of these techniques to remain awake and active.
